Have you ever heard somebody say that you're just not normal? I have for at least my whole life ever since I was 5 years old. I never knew really what people found out about me that wasn't normal. I mean I went to school normal, dressed normal, looked normal, even acted normal! I used to go to my mom and ask what was wrong with me. And she'd say "Just you and your brother aren't normal" I never understood it quite yet till I turned 8 years old. You see I have one older brother named David who's about 18 or in other words looks like he's 18. He goes off at months at a time and won't so anything about it. But this time he actually said something. I was out in the yard that day or night whichever you want to call it. (I'd say night though) And he walked up to me as I was laying down in the grass just looking up at the sky. "Tala" he said. I looked at him as he sat down beside me and I sat up saying "You're getting ready to go again aren't you?" He looked at me as if asking me how'd I already know. Sometimes I just know when he's getting ready to leave.
He smirked nodding and said "This time I wanted to tell you that it's soon going to be your turn" I looked at him confused saying "My turn for what? I like it here at home in the woods" He looked off back at the house saying "Trust me you'll find out soon enough" Then he just got up and walked back to the house. I starred after him thinking "What did he mean by that?" I mean yea sure I understand that we're not normal but not normal for what? I layed back down in the grass thinking about it until I was tired and got up going inside. My family and I ate dinner like usual and I went to bed early for some reason. I started to dream of something. I was running through the trees no running away from something when pain ripped through my body and I fell to the ground screaming out for help. I gasped setting up in my bed and looked around. After I was sure I sighed and heard a knock at my door. It was David; he came in closing the door behind him and came beside me saying "Come on we need to go" I looked at him saying "What? what do you mean David?" He grabbed one of my coats out my closet and said "There's no time to explain just get up and come...hurry up.
" I jumped out of bed and we both heard something crash outside the door. David pushed open my window and said "Hurry now Tala...there's not much time before they get here" and jumped out of it. I starred after him for a few seconds then jumped out myself. Then I felt David grab my arm and started to pull me into a run. "Wait where's mother and father" I cried out. "They can't help us now" he said. I turned my head to look at the house as we crossed the field on the side of the house. And saw in front were a couple men with dogs barking and yelling. One had my mother by ther arm and i didn't see my father. David pulled me up in his arms and then lifted me up toward a rocky wall at the edge of some trees. "Quiet they'll hear us" he snapped. I started to climb over the rocky wall and lose my footing. I slipped and some of the rocks crumbled to the ground then i heard the dogs barking and started heading toward us. I heard some kind of sound come from David and felt him shove me upward. I fell over on the other side on my back. I sat up shaking my head and saw David land in front of me and grab my arm pulling me into a run again. I still heard the dogs running after us and i started to grow tired of running.
"Dav...can we stop i'm tired" I complained and he slowed down as we came to a huge tree that had its roots expanded out but got thinner and thicker within it. David pulled me toward the thicker ones and pushed me between some handing me my coat and while backing away "I'll be right back stay right here and don't move no matter..." he was cut off mid-sentence as I saw a dog slam into him. Then I heard growling and snarling from a few others that showed up. I heard David yell "You want me come get me!" and saw him jump back across saying "Don't go anywhere!" and disappear in the trees with the dogs after him. I stayed inbetween the roots scared, and unsure whatto do for a couple hours. My legs started to ache from the position I was in and I hand't heard anything else from the dogs or David. Sighing I moved out from the roots and looked around cautiously. "Hurry back David" I thought silently and climbed up on one of the huge roots and sat down.
A couple more hours passed and I got the feeling that David wasn't coming back. I grew worried and got down from the root and started to walk away from the tree when I heard something snap behind me. I froze and slowly turned my head to see one of the dogs on the roots baring its teeth and growling at me. I turned all the way around backing away slowly and it growled more. I stepped back and tripped over a small fallen branch and looked up to see the dog jump toward me. I screamed out brigning my arm up to my face and heard something land on the ground a few feet awy from me. I opened my eyes seeing this much bigger dog with brown fur have the smaller one pinned to the ground and then saw it kill the smaller one. I started to back away still on the ground and the brown dog looked toward me. I breathed out slightly pushing myself up holding the branch in my hand and it started to growl at me. My eyes wide I froze as it started to move toward me and then it stopped a little bit from me starring. I swollowed and it started to move closer to me and I swung the branch at it and ducked turning around running.
I heard the dog growl in ager and start after me. As I ran I stumbled a couple times but was surprised at how the dog had not caught up to me. I glanced back not seeing it behind me. I turned my head back around and gasped stopping emediately and saw it right in front of me. It was low to the ground and growling at me. I shook my head slowly tears coming down my cheeks as I started to back away and it leaped at me and out of nowhere I saw another one the same size as the first but black furred jump over in front of me growling at it. I could have fainted at that very moment but instead I took off like a rabbit through the trees and heard them growling and barking at each other. I ran faster jumping over some bushes and after a little bit slowed down to a walk having to push away bushes that had thorn in them but that didn't stop them from giving me scratches.
My eyes searching around I felt a water drop into my head. Looking up it started to rain. Then I remembered my jacket and sighed as I forgot it back at that huge tree. Hugging my arms to myself I spotted a tree that had somewhat of an inside and ducked in it. Shaking from cold I pulled my legs closer and slowly dozed off. I don't remember how long I was asleep, but when I woke again I was against something warm. My eyes fluttered open seeing the sun and I saw black fur and I closed my eyes back again then popped them open my head lifting quickly. I couldn't say anything as there curled beside me was the big black dog from before. I swallowed hard and then felt it shift slowly and lift its head looking at me. I starred at it and it gave a soft whimper pushing its head against my forehead. I breathed out ragidly and blinked looking at him and lifted my hand slowly and pat its head.
I heard its tail thump against the ground smirked a little. "You saved my life last night" I said. I breathed in and slowly moved to stand up and it did too. It was much bigger than I was and probably bigger then David so I guessed it was a boy dog. "I'll call you Darky" I said patting his back. Then I felt its body stiffen and turn its head growling in a different direction. I flinched slightly hearing a loud bark a little ways off and took a step back and Darky looked at me and motioned me to get on its back. I looked at him and then heard the bark again but much closer. Darky started to turn around and walk at a steady pace. The bark came again but much closer and I heard a growl. I looked back behind me fear starting to set in and then felt Darky take his head and knock me on his back and start to run.
I clung on to him tightly making sure that I wasn't going to fall off and pushed my face into his back fur. I could feel the air rushing by me and slowly lifted my head seeing everything in a blur. I looked around seeing everything go by quickly. "Wow" I thought. And out of nowhere I felt something slam into us and fell off tumbling across the ground and I hit a rock. Shaking my head clear, I looked around and saw the brown dog and Darky fighting. I tried pushing myself up but my arm had hit that rock hard.
