The late evening air floated about the town with no disturbances other than food smells. People walked the pathways while doing their various businesses. It was quite boring if one thought about it and frankly it was even to a were.
Hubert was sitting on a ledge next to a resturant of some sort. His blue eyes were studying the lives playing out next to him on the patio. Humans...such a disgustingly pathetic little race. A local girl walked by with a dog on a leash. He stuck out his leg, allowing her trip over it. The dog piped up and began to bark at him. Hubert smirked a bit and suddenly the racket stopped. It was as if the dog understood whom it was dealing with.
Having about as much fun as he thought he'd get, which really wasn't anything, he hopped onto his feet and began to walk the streets. A sudden sight caught his attention and he just had to stop. Two hunters were hauling in several of their kills to the butcher. Usually he wouldn't bother, but he just felt he had to do something. With an evil grin pulling on his face, he snuck around the back of the butcher and then up to the corner where he could see the humans unloading. They were taking the meat into the side of the building and from their arms coated with blood and the stink of the animals they had killed, they had been at it a while. Hubert put his hood up, his eyes glowing, and shifted just so that his features gave him the attributes these humans thought a were had.
Readied, he ran up to the truck and took a good sized buck from the cart. As he lifted it, several of the hunters looked at him with faces of anger. They saw an 18 year old boy stealing their catch and weren't going to have it. "What are you doing?" "Get away, boy!" Oh it was just too good to pass up. He looked towards them so that the light could accent his features. "I'm sorry, but I think I have more right to them than you do," he chuckled gruffly in his half form. Shock coursed through their bodies and they backed off.
"Hey are you guys slacking off again," a guy called as he made his way to the door from inside. When he saw them scared to death and Hurbert hauling the stag off the cart he called out to them again.
"Why are you letting a boy take our haul?"
"He's a m-m-monster!"
"Don't be silly," the man said and then stepped towards Hurbert. "Boy I'd let go of the buck if I were you. Those are taken, but I'm sure the butcher can get ya some meat inside if you want, my treat if you need it so bad."
With that Hurbert turned and so did his features. What this man saw was a normal boy just causing trouble unneccessarily. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that this wasn't for the public and thanks for the offer. My family has been hitting it hard because of winter and all." Hurbert dropped the buck nicely as the man nodded. "Yeah it's been kinda rough." He then made his way to the front of the building with him. "Ya'll get back to work and stop stuttering about monsters when there are none." His group nodded to him and got back to what they were doing.
Before Hurbert went inside, he allowed them to glimpse his form again and they quickly got back into work. Either they thought they were going crazy or that he was for real, but no one wanted to say anything to him.
When he went inside, he was given some sausage links free of charge 'to help his family till the frost left'. He kindly thanked the man and then walked out and back into town. When he was clear of the shop he burst out laughing. Humans were so stupid.
