Beneath the palms of her hands she felt hard dead grass and dirt that had been warmed by the sun. The strong rays beat down on her back, leaving her hot and a little bit sticky. Her bare arms were covered in dirt, dust, and what looked to be dried red blood. Though her eyes were still adjusting to the world around her, she was instantly overcome with a sense of fear, knowing that she had wound up in an unfamiliar place. She didn’t know how she got there or where “there” was. She felt her heart thump within her chest as she placed the palms of her hands against the ground and attempted to hoist herself up. But her body was weak and tired, and her first attempt was unsuccessful. Still lying on her stomach, she scanned the parts of her body that she could see, and shuddered. She had no idea who she was. She couldn’t recall her age, her place of birth, or even her name. She had no idea where she was or how she got there. Everything was unfamiliar and very frightening, but the girl was too fatigued to panic. Her blonde hair was dirty and matted to her face in a mass of tangles and knots. Her clothing was soiled, covered in grime and crusted blood. She was clothed in a tattered white fitted blouse and a pair of black slacks that had a hole in one of the knees, and smaller tears throughout the seat and legs. Her feet were uncovered; her shoes were nowhere to be found. Remarkably, she hadn’t been seriously injured and only had a moderately deep gash on her forehead, superficial cuts and scrapes on her stomach, back, and limbs, and an array of black and blue bruises. She suspected her left wrist may have been sprained during her ordeal, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t a huge upset. The wind blew heavily against her, ruffling her hair and her clothing, and covering her with a thin layer of dirt. She groaned quietly and again tried to push herself off the ground. Her wrist snapped forward almost instantaneously and she cried out, shocked by the sudden sharp pain. She managed to hoist herself up despite her injury and finally sat upright, experiencing a little bit of vertigo as she did so. She gazed down at her hands, the fair skin reddened by the hot sun. Dirt was encrusted beneath her fingernails. The sun was still high in the sky, but the girl knew she would need to get up and out of the field as soon as possible. The sun was unforgiving, and already she was feeling the effects of its heat. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead and she wiped them away with the back of her right hand. Her mouth was hot and dry and finding suitable water to drink was high on her list of priorities. The girl was frightened and disoriented, but there was no sense in feeling sorry for herself. She needed to get up and find help before she grew too weak to do so. She didn’t know how long she had been in the field, but she suspected she had been there for at least two days. After stiffening her legs in anticipation of her next move, she pushed herself onto her feet, but fell only seconds later. Unwilling to give in, she persisted and tried to stand once more. Her second try was sloppy and her legs shook beneath her, but she somehow managed to stay upright. She stood still for a few moments before attempting to walk forward, and took a moment to study the unfamiliar world around her. The area was completely desolate. The grass was dead, there were few trees to be seen, and the only promising thing she saw was a narrow dirt road that curved through the field. A single tear escaped one of her ducts and she quickly swiped it away. Eventually the disheveled blonde moved forward, taking slow and unsteady steps toward the rocky dirt road. Her body trembled with every step she took, but she pushed onward anyway. The girl had no choice. She knew she needed to move forward, or she would die.
