The morning air was crisp and cool. There had been a breeze earlier, but it had died down now. Light snow covered the plains. All was quiet. Suddenly, a loud squeak filled the area as, seemingly out of nowhere, a vole raced through the grass, running for its life. A large brown wolf was close behind. Chace's long, powerful legs helped him easily catch up to the prey. When he was close enough, he bent his head down and scooped up the vole in his jaw. The small rodent squealed again as it dangled from the wolf's mouth. Chace held the creature between his teeth. He considered for a moment eating the animal, the idea left him just as quickly as it had come. He was not hungry. Besides, the vole would not fill him up if he had needed to eat. The forest was for hunting. He had come to the plains to play.
Chace lifted his head and flung the vole into the air. He caught the animal on his snout. The vole seemed too shaken to know what to do. The werewolf lifted his head again so that the tiny creature fell down onto his back. He swished his tail and sent the creature flying. He spun around, but he was too slow to catch his toy. The vole was frozen on the ground for several seconds. Then it took off running again. Chace let it get a head start before casually jogging after it. The animal was hard to see, but that matter. The wolf could easily pick up its strong scent and hear it squealing with his sharp ears. He could have caught the vole if he had wanted, but he loved the chance to stretch his legs and run. That was when he felt the most free. Out in the open, there was no one to confront him or tell him what to do. Of course, he would have loved to have company, but he could be on his own if need be.
Needing to release more energy, Chace picked up speed. The vole seemed to run faster as well. The werewolf put his muzzle down close to the ground near the critter. He could barely see the critter escape down a burrow. His nose followed the vole into the hole. He could smell more than one animal down there. Fine. he would let them rest. Chace took his nose out of the shook hid head to clear it of the dirt that had clumped to his fur. He now swept his gaze across the area in search for any o creature. Did no one else want to play? He was a fun guy. Oh well. Someone would come if they wanted to. He would just have to find his own fun.
He closed his eyes as the breeze picked up again. He enjoyed this weather. That just meant he had to get the most out of it while he still could. He knew just how to do it. He felt a rush of adrenaline as he bounded through the plains. He loved the feeling of the wind in his fur and snow beneath his paws. When he had done enough running, he stopped and flopped onto his back. He wiggled in the snow and swished his tail. He wondered what imprints his shape would make. Wanting to find out, he hopped back onto his paws. He shook his fur to get rid of the snow, but some of it still stuck, melting to wet his fur and leave it damp against his skin. He was satisfied with the distorted shape that was left in the snow. That was great! He let himself calm again. He pricked his ears, listening to the sounds of the plains and for anyone who drew near.
